Frank I. Cowan

Frank I. Cowan (born May 20, 1888 in Palmyra , Maine , † February 23, 1948 in Portland , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1941 to 1944 .

Life

Frank Irving Cowan was born in Palmyra to Lewville A. Cowan and Fannie Evelyn Woodworth. He attended Maine Central Institute and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1913. During his time in college, he taught at several high schools. He then studied at the University of Maine Law School. He graduated there in 1917 and was admitted to the bar that same year and opened a law firm in Bangor , Maine.

A year later he moved with his family to Portland and opened a law firm there as well. His son Caspar Frank Cowan joined this firm in 1940 and together they ran the firm until Frank I. Cowan's death.

A member of the Republican Party , he was elected to the Portland Common Council in 1920 and served as chairman for two years. From 1926 to 1932 he was the clerk of the Portland Municipal Court and from 1935 to 1940 he was the president of the State Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1939 and 1940 and from 1941 to 1944 he was Maine Attorney General.

Cowan belonged to the Methodist Church and was a member of the Freemasons and the Delta Upsilon associations ; Phi Kappa Phi .

Frank I. Cowan was married to Helen Anna Caspar. There are three sons and one daughter from this marriage. Cowan died in Portland on February 23, 1948.
