James Tierney

James E. Tierney (born April 27, 1947 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1981 to 1991 .

Life

James Tierney was born in Brooklyn. He grew up in Brunswick , Maine and was able to take advantage of the proximity to Bowdoin College . He sat in lectures and used the college library. He then studied at the University of Maine and the University of Maine Law School. He graduated from there in 1975. From 1973 to 1980 he was while studying as a member of the Democratic Party in the Maine House of Representatives and then from 1981 to 1991 he was Maine Attorney General. During this time he was active in the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) and trained newly elected state attorneys for several years. He has served as special attorney in Florida, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Vermont. He has been teaching attorneys general courses at Columbia Law School since autumn 2000 and at Harvard Law School since spring 2010. He has been a law lecturer there since 2015. He previously taught at Boston College Law School, Northeastern Law School, and the University of Maine School of Law. He served on the boards of the American Judicature Society and the Boards of Commentators of the Courtroom Television Network. In 2006 Tierney was named Public Interest Professor of the Year by the students.

James Tierney is married to Pulitzer Prize- winning author Elizabeth Strout and the couple had five children.
