Joseph W. Simpson

Joseph W. Simpson (born December 20, 1870 in York , Maine , † June 12, 1944 in York Harbor , Maine) was an American businessman and politician who was Maine State Treasurer from 1913 to 1914 and from 1917 to 1920 .

Life

Joseph W. Simpson was born in York, Maine to Jeremiah P. and Mary Lowe. He attended local schools and the Kent`s Hill Academy . Together with his brother Willard J. Simpson he went into the coal and wood business of his father. After five years, his brother bought his shares in the business and Joseph W. Simpson opened a store in meat and other supplies. He also worked in the real estate business in York.

He was a member of the York Harbor Village Corporation as an assessor and ran the Marshall House and the Emerson Hotel . He was Treasurer of the Marshall House Corporation , President of the Maine state and New England Hotel Men's Association, and was a member of the American Hotel Men's Association . Simpson was one of the founders of the Maine Publicity Bureau . Until its closure in 1933, he was president of the York County Trust company and was also president of other insurance organizations.

Simpson was a member of the Republican Party . In 1897 he was Town Treasurer of York and was a member of the Maine House of Representatives . From 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the Maine Senate . During this time he was a member of the Finance Committee and was its chairman for the second year. In 1924 and 1936 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Maine.

As a Freemason , he belonged to several lodges. He was a member of the St. Aspinwall Lodge of Free Masons , Royal Arch Masons , Knights Templar, of Biddeford , Kora Temple , Mystic Shrine , Lewiston. He was also a member of the Riverside Lodge , Odd Fellows , Kittery, and Dirigo Encampment of Kittery .

In 1899 he married Ida L. Rogers. They had an adopted daughter. He died on June 12, 1944, and his grave is in First Parish Cemetery in York Village.
