Life

George Lafayette Beal was born in Norway, Maine to Ezra F. Beal. His father was one of the founders of the Town of Norway and was also an architect and businessman. The family moved to Portland . Beal attended local schools and graduated from Westbrook Seminary. He then worked as an agent for the Canadian Express Company . He became interested in the military at an early age and was elected captain of the Norway Light Infantry.

Officer in the Civil War

After the attack on Fort Sumter and President Abraham Lincoln's call for troops, Governor Israel Washburn organized a regiment to meet the quota for Maine. Beal and his company reported on April 20, 1861 for three months and just seven days later they moved to a training camp in Portland. Beal was probably the first volunteer to sign up for military service in Meine.

After three months of service, he reported again, this time for two years, and was appointed Colonel of the 10th Maine Infantry. He was wounded several times during the fighting, but always returned to service after a short time. After his service ended in May 1863, he signed up again for three years. Beal was named Colonel in the 29th Maine Regiment.

Beal took part with his regiment in the Battle of Cedar Mountain in 1862 and in the battles on the Red River and the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. After the Battle of Mansfield, also known as the Battle of Sabine Crossroads, in which he strategically supported the troops of Nathaniel P. Banks , he was appointed Brigadier-General on November 30, 1864. His brigade was the first to break through enemy lines at the Battle of Cedar Creek after General Philip Sheridan intervened in the battle.

After the war he served his service on a base in South Carolina, with the headquarters in Darlington so successful that he was appointed Brevet General of Volunteers . He left the service on January 15, 1866 after almost five years.

Politicians after the war

Contrary to his father's wishes, Beal did not take over the Beal Hotel after the war, but became a member of the Republican Party as a politician. He was a delegate of the Republican National Convention on which General Ulysses S. Grant was declared a Republican presidential candidate in 1868 and participated as an elector in the presidential election.

In 1872 he was appointed Pensions Agent for the Portland Bureau of Pensions. He held that position until the office moved to Concord, New Hampshire. He was Adjutant-General of Maine from 1880 to 1885 and State Treasurer of Maine from 1888 to 1894.

As a businessman he worked for the Norway Branch Railroad and later for the Paris and Norway Electric Road .

George Lafayette Beal was married to Belinda Deane Thompson (1827-1898). He died of heart failure on December 11, 1896 at his home in Norway. His grave is in Norway Pine Grove Cemetery in Paris, Maine.
