Asa Redington

Asa Redington (born July 4, 1789 in Vassalboro , Massachusetts , † June 5, 1874 in Augusta , Maine ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Maine State Treasurer from 1835 to 1837 .

Life

Asa Redington Jr. was born the son of Asa Redington (1761-1845) and Mary Polly Getchell (1770-1804) in what is now Maine. His father Asa Redington was a member of the George Washington Guard and was a very successful businessman and politician. The Redington Museum at Waterville was built in his home and is named after him.

Redington studied at Bowdoin College . which he finished in 1811. He worked as a lawyer in Augusta and was a District Court judge. He was also the founder of the Ticonic Bank of Waterville . From 1835 to 1837 he was Maine State Treasurer.

Asa Redington married Caroline F. Sherwin (1800–1832) in 1817. They had a daughter. After the death of Caroline Sherwin he married Sophia Longfellow (1795-1867). This marriage remained childless. Redington died in Augusta on June 5, 1874. His grave is in Riverside Cemetery in Lewiston.
