Esreff H. Banks

Esreff Hill Banks (born May 26, 1821 in Buxton , Maine , † November 27, 1903 in Biddeford , Maine) was an American businessman and politician who was Maine State Treasurer from 1877 to 1878 and Mayor of Biddeford in 1860.

Life

Esreff H. Banks was born in Buxton, Maine to James and Ruth Merrill Banks. Banks went to the western United States in about 1838, but returned to Maine in 1843 and worked in Saco .

In 1847/1848 he opened a trading business, the Hooper & Banks company with his partner EHC Hooper in Biddeford. After his partner left in 1856, he continued to run the business alone until 1874.

As a member of the Republican Party , Banks was elected to the Maine House of Representatives for the town of Biddeford in 1856 and 1857 and led to the end of his tenure as Mayor of Biddeford after the death of Jonathan Tuck in 1860. He was elector in the 1868 United States presidential election for Ulysses S. Grant . He was a member of the Maine Senate from 1864 and 1865. He was elected Treasurer of York County in 1874, 1875, and 1876 and was Treasurer of Maine from 1877 to 1878.

For over ten years he was a trustee of York County Savings Bank and for fourteen years he was director of the First National Bank of Biddeford and its president since 1879.

Banks married Lucinda Atkinson in 1847. They had a daughter who died in 1858 at the age of 9.
