Karl Franz Anton Ritter von Schreibers (born August 15, 1775 in Pressburg , † May 21, 1852 in Vienna ) was an Austrian scientist.

Life

Karl von Schreibers came to Vienna at the age of nine, attended the Löwenburgsche Konvikt from 1784 and began studying medicine in 1793 . In addition, he was assistant to the phrenologist Franz Joseph Gall until 1795 . After receiving his doctorate in 1798, Schreibers worked as a doctor for his uncle and in 1799 traveled to several European countries. In 1801 he was made assistant to the professor of natural history at the University of Vienna , Peter Jordan , whose lectures he supplemented from 1802 to 1807. He also ran a medical practice.

From early on, von Schreibers dealt with botany , mineralogy and zoology and established contacts with European scientists in this field. At their suggestion, he dealt with the still little-known grotto olms Krain and an Australian beetle species. In 1806 , von Schreibers, as the successor to the late Andreas Stütz , was appointed head of the " kk Hof-Naturalien-Cabinete ", whose collection he significantly expanded. In 1809 he was also significantly involved in the relocation of the stocks to protect against the Napoleonic troops. The scientific expedition to Brazil, initiated by Prince Metternich in 1817 , was entrusted by Schreiber in scientific terms. In the end, Schreiber was also the founder of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, which was built according to scientific principles . Schreibers described the meteorite mineral in iron meteorites , which is named after him today as Schreibersite .

In 1812 he became a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1815 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1818 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
