McMaster during the 54th MSC 2018

On February 20, 2017, President Donald Trump nominated him as National Security Advisor. McMaster had to be confirmed by the US Senate because he did not want to quit active military service for his new office. This confirmation was made on March 15, 2017. His predecessor Michael T. Flynn resigned on February 13, 2017.

No close relationship developed between McMaster and Trump. Even before McMaster took office in the White House, Trump mocked his appearance as that of a beer seller. McMaster used to explain the advantages and disadvantages of decisions to the president when explaining the security situation, which irritated Trump, who only preferred one option, which he could agree to or which he could reject. According to other reports, McMaster took interventionist positions that ran counter to Trump's isolationist tendencies: "After a North Korean missile test in 2017, McMaster sought options for an immediate military attack during a call with then-Defense Secretary James Mattis and then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson . "

McMaster is said to have angered Trump by commenting at the Munich Security Conference in mid-February 2018 that it was "irrefutably correct" that Russia intervened in the 2016 presidential election .

On March 22, 2018, US President Donald Trump announced via his Twitter account that HR McMaster would step down on April 9, 2018. He was succeeded by John R. Bolton , who had been US ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush . McMaster said in an interview that he would have preferred to stay on duty until the summer, but the date best reflects what is good for the country and the president. He is also retiring from military service.

Positions

McMaster (2016)

In his dissertation, published under the title Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam , McMaster did not argue that the Vietnam War was lost in Washington, DC in the media or on the battlefield. President Lyndon B. Johnson and especially his incompetent military advisors were responsible for the fact that the Vietnam War ended in disaster for the Americans. The advisors did not provide their president with any really relevant information about the Vietnam War, but told him what he wanted to hear.

McMaster expressed the opinion that President George W. Bush launched the Iraq war had been inadequately planned and witness of "intellectual failure."

President Obama's decision not to use ground troops in the fight against the terrorist organization "Islamic State" was considered by McMaster to be wrong. You have to be able to hold recaptured areas, he said. McMaster warned Obama against downsizing the US Army; this could be too small in the future "to protect our nation".
