Richard C. Macke (born January 4, 1938 in Freeport , Illinois ) is Admiral i. R. of the United States Navy . He was in command of the United States Pacific Command from July 19, 1994 to January 31, 1996 when he was forced to resign over comments on a rape case by American soldiers in Okinawa . He was later involved in the collision of the USS Greeneville (SSN-772) with the Ehime Maru .

Life

Macke graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1960 and was named a naval aviator in 1961 . He was then a Douglas A-4 pilot on the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) .

In 1965 he was selected to work at the Naval Air Test Center . In 1970 he graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School . In 1971 he became the commanding officer of a flight squadron of the USS Independence (CV-62) at Naval Air Station Cecil Field .
