The Order of the Crown of Thailand , with full name The Very Honorable Order of the Crown of Thailand ( Thai : เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ อัน มี เกียรติยศ ยิ่ง มงกุฎไทย , English The Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand ), is a high royal Thai order .

history

The order was founded on December 29, 1869 under the name Order of the Siamese Crown by King Chulalongkorn as a general order of merit and is awarded to both Thais and foreign dignitaries for their services to the kingdom . In 1932, when Siam was renamed Thailand, the name of the order was changed accordingly.

Originally donated as a breast star in four classes, the order was divided into five classes in 1873. The number of members was limited.

• Knight with Grand Cross to 40 members
• Grand Commander to 100 members
• Commander to 200 members
• Follower to 400 members
• Member without limit

When the statutes were changed in 1889, the order was expanded to include two classes - a gold and silver medal - and at the same time the regulations for members were repealed. In 1918, King Vajiravudh established a special level, and in 1941 a department for women and men was created. Since then, the medal has been awarded in eight classes:

The order decoration is a round star with alternating red and green lotus leaves as a double border. Above that there is an ornament for the suspension ring. The round center shield has a golden field. The front shows an engraving of the Siamese royal crown with seven-tier parasols on the right and left.

On the back of the award, the central shield has the royal initials " จ ปร ", short for: " มหา จุฬาลงกรณ์ ป รม ราชาธิราช " (King Chulalongkorn the Great) . The special level is made of gold, all other classes are made of silver.

Carrying method

The special class is worn on an indigo-colored sash from the left shoulder to the right hip and the grand cross on a blue sash from the right shoulder to the left hip. The breast star is attached to the left breast. Grand Commander and Commander carry the award as a neck medal , the Grand Commander additionally with a slightly smaller breast star. Officer, knight and holder of the medal are decorated on the ribbon on the left side of the chest. A rosette is also attached to the officers' band .

The breast star is a wreath made of green and red enameled lotus leaves. In the center is a blue enamelled medallion that is surrounded by a ring made of precious stones and overlooked by the Thai royal crown.

The ribbon for grades one to eight is blue with narrow red, yellow and green side stripes. At the special level, the ribbon (like the sash) is indigo-colored with red and white side stripes.

Ladies wear the third to eighth grade (the highest level in each case) on a ladies' bow.
