history

The Chung-Hoon at RIMPAC 06.

The Chung-Hoon was commissioned in 1998 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in early 2002 . After a construction period of less than 12 months, the destroyer was launched. In September 2004, the official commissioning with the United States Navy took place . Shortly before, the Chung-Hoon was damaged by a tug when it tried to moor on the front starboard side of the destroyer. After the commissioning, exercise drives followed and, from February 2005, a three-month overhaul.

On October 13, 2005, about 400 miles northeast of Hawaii , the Chung-Hoon received an emergency call from the Panamanian-flagged freighter C-Laurel , on which a crew member's hand had been torn off in an accident. The Chung-Hoon took the sailor to Honolulu , where he was operated on.

In early 2006, the Chung-Hoon moved to her first mission and took part in the RIMPAC exercise. In 2007 the ship was at the side of the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) in the Persian Gulf for seven and a half months . In 2008 the destroyer also took part in the RIMPAC maneuver . In January 2009, the Chung-Hoon moved with the combat group around the USS Boxer (LHD-4) in the western Pacific and the Persian Gulf. During this voyage, the Chung-Hoon was assigned to escort the unarmed ocean surveillance ship USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS-23) after it was harassed by Chinese warships off Hainan . In June, the Chung-Hoon took part in exercises with the Malay Navy.

In July 2010, the destroyer took part in the Invincible Spirit exercise alongside the USS George Washington (CVN-73) along with South Korean forces . In June 2011 the Chung Hoon began a mission to the western Pacific.
