The USS Ross (DDG-71) is a destroyer of the American Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . It is named after Captain Donald K. Ross , who distinguished himself during the attack on Pearl Harbor .

history

DDG-71 was approved in 1992 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in April 1995 . The ship was launched in March 1996 and was christened by the widow of Ross, who died in 1992, Mrs. Helen Ross. The official entry into the United States Navy fleet took place in June 1997. After the first exercises, the Ross went back to the shipyard for post shakedown availability.

After further training and practice trips, the first transfer of the Ross began in early 1999 , with the combat group around the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) the destroyer drove in the Mediterranean during Operation Allied Force . After the end of the voyage in September, the next relocation followed in May 2000, when the Ross took part in the BALTOPS exercise . During this time the Ross also ran into Kiel . In 2001 the ship was involved in Operation Enduring Freedom .

In 2006 the Ross sailed in the Mediterranean as part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 . In February 2008 she was transferred to the Mediterranean and the Middle East as an escort for the USS Nassau (LHA-4) . In 2010 she was transferred to the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as escort .

In June 2014, the USS Ross left its previous home port, Naval Station Norfolk, and was relocated to its new home base, Rota Naval Base .

On April 7, 2017, the USS Ross and USS Porter fired 59 tomahawk cruise missiles to attack the Syrian military airfield at Ash-Shayrat .
