The USS McFaul (DDG-74) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class .

history

The McFaul was commissioned from Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1993 and laid down there in 1996. After a construction period of almost exactly one year, the ship was launched. The namesake was the Chief Petty Officer Donald L. McFaul, a SEAL who fell in Panama on December 18, 1989 . McFaul was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his service . The destroyer officially entered service in April 1998.

In 1999 the McFaul sailed as part of the combat group around the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, in 2001 the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) sailed the same region .

In early 2004, the McFaul moved with a combat group around the USS Wasp (LHD-1) in the Persian Gulf . Other group members were the USS Shreveport (LPD-12) , USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) , USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55) , USS Yorktown (CG-48), and USS Connecticut (SSN-22)

On August 22, 2005, the McFaul was involved in a minor collision with her sister ship USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) . Off the coast of Jacksonville , Florida , the McFaul bowed the Churchill . Both ships were only slightly damaged and were able to return to the base under their own power.

In 2006, the destroyer was part of the combat group around the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) , with which the McFaul participated in the war on terror for six months . In late summer 2007, the ship took part in exercise Neptune Warrior .

In 2008 the McFaul moved to the Mediterranean. On August 24, 2008, the McFaul reached the Georgian city of Batumi with relief supplies on board . To alleviate the humanitarian consequences of the Caucasus conflict , the destroyer brought 55 tons of goods into the region. In early 2010, the McFaul ran alongside the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) . The destination of the trip is the Middle East, where the combat group supports the US forces in Iraq and the fight against pirates off Somalia . In April, ten pirates surrendered to the McFaul after their attack on the MV Rising Sun failed.

After an assassination attempt on the US consulate in Benghazi , Libya on September 12, 2012 , in which the four diplomats and the American ambassador responsible for Libya, John Christopher Stevens, were killed, the McFaul was destroyed together with the USS Laboon , another destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class , relocated to the Libyan coast without a specific order, according to government information.
