The USS John Finn (DDG-113) is a destroyer of the US Navy , which the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer heard and the 63rd unit of this class. The ship is named after John William Finn .
history
Surname
The ship's name bearer is John William Finn. Finn was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 1942 by Naval Admiral Chester W. Nimitz . During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, John William Finn fired - despite numerous wounds - from an uncovered position for over two hours with a machine gun at the attacking aircraft. After receiving poor medical care, he returned to the troops that same day and helped arm the remaining American aircraft. He died in 2010 at the age of over 100.
construction
After only three destroyers of the Zumwalt class were made, the USN decided to purchase new Burkes . DDG-113 was ordered from Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula , Mississippi in 2011 . SECNAV Raymond Edwin Mabus announced in February 2012 that the ship would be named after John William Finn. The keel was laid on November 18, 2013. It was launched a year and a half later. On May 2, 2015, the destroyer was christened by Laura Stavridis, wife of James G. Stavridis . On the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombing, the USS John Finn was delivered to the Navy on December 7, 2016. The ship entered service in Pearl Harbor on July 15, 2017.
