Hermann Grenacher

Hermann Grenacher (born March 18, 1843 in Lipburg , † April 25, 1923 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German zoologist.

Life

Grenacher first studied mathematics and chemistry in Karlsruhe, then zoology and medicine in Würzburg and Göttingen and received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1867 ( contributions to a closer knowledge of the muscles of the cyclosatomen and leptocardiers ). He was an assistant in Würzburg and completed his habilitation in Göttingen in 1869. He was a professor at the Forest Academy in Hannoversch-Münden for one year. In 1872 he became associate professor for zoology in Munich and in 1873 full professor for zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Rostock . From 1881 he was professor of zoology at the University of Halle . In 1909 he retired.

He conducted histological studies (1879 introduction of staining with borax and alum carmine), undertook morphological and developmental studies of arthropods and molluscs, and examined with Friedrich Carl Noll (1832-1893) the anatomy and systematics of root-mouth jellyfish (Rhizostomeae). He was with Noll in 1871/72 on a research trip to southern Europe, West Africa, the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands. Grenacher also studied the organs of vision of insects and squids.

In 1906 he became a secret councilor. In 1909 he was awarded the 3rd Class Crown Order and in 1891 the 4th Class Red Eagle Order.

He was an honorary member of the German Zoological Society .
