The USS O'Kane (DDG-77) is a destroyer of Arleigh Burke class . The United States Navy named the ship after Rear Admiral Richard O'Kane , a submarine commander in World War II .

history

DDG-77 was ordered in 1994 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in March 1997 . The unit was launched in March of the following year. After the final equipment and the shipyard test drives, the O'Kane was put into service in October 1999.

In July 2001, the destroyer started its first mission with the USS Carl Vinson , which ended in January 2002 after missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom . In the summer of that year, the ship took part in the RIMPAC exercise. In 2003 the O'Kane moved to the Middle East for Operation Iraqi Freedom and was involved in the land attack by Tomahawk cruise missile.

In 2005 the destroyer operated, again with the Carl Vinson , in the Horn of Africa , and in 2006 she took part in RIMPAC for a second time. In early 2007, the ship ran as part of the group around the USS John C. Stennis and took part in exercise Valiant Shield in August . In 2008, the O'Kane was used again as part of the RIMPAC exercise. In 2009, she took part in exercises with the Japanese Marine Self-Defense Forces . In July 2010 the destroyer moved to the Middle East, among other things as part of the National Missile Defense .

In preparation for operations in the fight against IS , the O'Kane moved together with the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush and the destroyers USS Arleigh Burke and USS Truxtun in the Persian Gulf in June 2014 .
