The USS Mustin (DDG-89) is a United States Navy guided missile destroyer . She belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . The ship is named for the Mustin family , who have served the Navy since 1896 and who produced several admirals.

history

DDG-89 was commissioned in 1998. The keel of the destroyer was laid at Ingalls Shipbuilding in early 2001 , and it was launched at the end of the same year. The official date for commissioning was July 26, 2003.

In 2005 the Mustin sailed as part of the combat group around the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the Persian Gulf as protection against attacks after Operation Iraqi Freedom . Since 2006 the destroyer has been stationed as a forward unit together with the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) in Yokosuka , Japan. There she took over from the frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG-48) and took part in exercise Valiant Shield in 2007 .

In 2008 the Mustin was sent to the coast of Burma for relief efforts after Cyclone Nargis . After more than three weeks off the coast, however, the combat group around the USS Essex (LHD-2) was withdrawn after no authorization was received to bring relief supplies into the country. In 2009 she took part in the Talisman Saber exercise with Australian forces.

Armament

For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2007 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
