The USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class .
history
The Donald Cook , named after a US soldier who died in captivity of the Viet Cong , was piled up at Bath Iron Works in 1996 and commissioned in late 1998. The Cook began her first mission in June 2000 with the carrier combat group around the USS George Washington (CVN-73) towards the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf . There she also supported her sister ship USS Cole (DDG-67) after the terrorist attack on the ship. In the next mission, from August 2001, the Cook took part in the exercise "Joint Task Force Exercise" off the US east coast, from February to March 2002 in "Strong Resolve" in the waters of Northern Europe. In 2003 the Cook carried out her second mission, this time as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) . On March 19, the Cook fired the first cruise missiles from the Red Sea at targets in Iraq. In 2006 and 2007 the destroyer moved to the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf and in 2008 the Cook took part in the exercise "Joint Warrior 08". During the UNITAS 2009 maneuver , the destroyer shot at the decommissioned USS Connolly (DD-979) during a SINKEX with an AGM-84 Harpoon . The Cook then moved to the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Aden and the Mediterranean for seven months.
When the Cook was moved unannounced to the Black Sea at the beginning of April 2014 to demonstrate support for the Eastern European allies during the crisis in Ukraine , this was perceived as a provocation in Russia; it was also a demonstration of the US troop presence for Russia and the Eastern Europeans Countries thought. On April 12, 2014, the ship for 90 minutes total of twelve sometimes very tight and at low altitude by a Russian was combat aircraft of the type Sukhoi Su-24 passes, as the US Navy announced. The Russian pilot did not react to communication attempts. The Navy expert Christopher Harmer of the US think tank Institute for the Study of War spoke of a flyby (not overflight) and rated the incident as one of numerous provocations. Another incident occurred in April 2016 in the Baltic Sea. Here, Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft again flew over the ship at a low altitude (up to 9 meters) and allegedly simulated attacks.
On January 19, 2019, the Cook entered the Black Sea again.
