history

DDG-104 was commissioned in 2002. The keel of the ship was laid on November 17, 2005, at Bath Iron Works in Bath , Maine . The ship was christened on May 19, 2007, godmother was Michelle Sterett Bernson, a descendant of the namesake. The next day the ship was launched. The ship was officially put into service on June 26, 2008. After the final equipment and test drives, the commissioning of the Sterett was celebrated with a ceremony on August 9, 2008 in Baltimore , Maryland .

In September 2010, the Sterett began her first mission alongside the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) in the Pacific and the Persian Gulf. On this voyage in February 2011 , the Sterett chased a pirate-hijacked yacht with four Americans on board. While the destroyer's crew was negotiating the release of the hostages, the pirates fired a reactive anti-tank rifle at the Sterett and shot the hostages. A US special command then went on board, killed two and arrested 13 other pirates. Two pirates were also arrested aboard the Sterett , where they had negotiated the release.
