The USS Chafee (DDG-90) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . It is named after the politician John Chafee .
history
The Chafee was commissioned in 1998 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in 2001 . After a construction period of 18 months, the destroyer was launched. Godmothers were Chaffe's widow Virginia and Diane Blair, wife of then Admiral Dennis C. Blair . In October 2003 it was officially put into service with the United States Navy . The entire construction period of the ship was accompanied by a team from Discovery Channel who shot the documentary Destroyer: Forged in Steel . The ship is named after former Senator John Chafee , who died in 1999 and served as a Marine on Guadalcanal . The chafee is stationed in Pearl Harbor .
In 2004 the destroyer carried out exercises in the combat group around the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) off the coast of Southern California . On May 20, 2005, a six-month deployment with the Nimitz began as part of the war on terrorism . On June 1, 2007, the Chafee shelled a Somali village in the Puntland region with its on-board guns. The target was to pull the masterminds of the terrorist attacks on the US embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi .
In August, the destroyer was part of exercise Valiant Shield . With the Nimitz , the Chafee moved to the West Pacific in early 2008 to replace the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) , which was actually sailing there and had to go into dry dock. In April she docked with the combat group to visit the port in Hong Kong . In 2009 the Chafee took part in a CARAT exercise with the navies of Singapore and Malaysia, and then in August 2011 at the Seattle Seafair . In February 2012 she was part of the US forces in exercise Cobra Gold off the coast of Thailand.
