List of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of destroyers of the Arleigh Burke class contains all ships of the Arleigh Burke class classified as guided missile destroyers ( abbreviation DDG ) . A total of 65 units have been completed so far, all of which are still in service. The only operator is the United States Navy . Twelve more ships are still under construction or are planned.

Construction and history

The United States Navy operates a total of 65 ships. Another 12 ships have been approved or are under construction. Actually, the Burkes should be supplemented by the Zumwalt class . But since only three units of this class are being built, additional Arleigh Burke destroyers are to be procured instead.

The ships are divided into four flights (I, II, IIA, III). They differ in length, weight and electronic equipment. The ships of Flight I represent the basic version of the Burkes . A total of 21 ships were built. They were all ordered between 1985 and 1992 and entered service between 1991 and 1997. Their IDs run from DDG-51 to DDG-71 .

Flight II ships received improved electronics , as well as an improved version of the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System , which can accommodate a longer version of the standard missile . In addition, this flight no longer has an AGM-84 Harpoon . In total, only seven ships were built. They were all ordered between 1992 and 1994 and entered service in 1998 and 1999. Their IDs run from DDG-72 to DDG-78 .

The ships of Flight IIA were lengthened by around two meters so that they can permanently transport two helicopters in an additional hangar (see also photo details ). This made them about 1000 ts heavier. A total of 45 ships were and are being built. They were ordered between 1994 and 2013 and were put into service between 2000 and 2012, with the exception of the last eleven ships still under construction. Their IDs run from DDG-79 to DDG-123 .

The procurement of the Flight III , which will have the new AN / SPY-6 radar for Aegis , has been running since 2016 . In 2013 three of these ships were ordered, their IDs run from DDG-124 to DDG-126 .

The units delivered so far were built at two different shipyards :

Name of the shipyard number
Bath Iron Works 34
Ingalls shipbuilding 30th

Of the 12 units yet to be built, six are expected to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding and six at Bath Iron Works.
