The USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) is a United States Navy guided missile destroyer . She belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . The ship is named after John Paul Jones , one of the fathers of the US Navy.
history
construction
In September 1987 the contract for the construction of DDG-53 was placed. In August 1990, the ship was laid down as the third of its class, the shipyard was Bath Iron Works . The destroyer was launched in October 1991 and was christened. In December 1993 the John Paul Jones was put into service. She was the first ship of her class to serve in the Pacific.
The Jones has been a platform for the Shock Trials of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer selected. The hull was tested for compressive strength by close explosions, both above and below water.
Emergency trips
The John Paul Jones was mainly used in the Persian Gulf . This included a trip on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in 2001 when the combat group was deployed as part of Operation Southern Watch . Subsequently, the ship took part in the Afghanistan war and shot down BGM-109 Tomahawk at targets in Afghanistan.
In 2004 and 2006 the John Paul Jones took part in the multinational exercise RIMPAC , in 2005 in the exercise Talisman Saber . In 2007, the Valiant Shield exercise followed . With the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) the destroyer was moved to the Western Pacific to replace the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) stationed in Japan , which had to be overhauled in dry dock.
In January 2016, the former frigate Reuben James `was sunk by an SM-6 missile from the USS John Paul Jones while targeting at sea .
