The USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . The United States Navy ship is named after Admiral Forrest Sherman , who was Chief of Naval Operations .
history
Construction of the DDG-98 began in 1998 when the ship was authorized and placed with Ingalls Shipbuilding . At its shipyard in Pascagoula , Mississippi , the destroyer was laid down in August 2003, launching and christening took place in October a year later. Godmother was the daughter of the namesake, Ann Sherman Fitzpatrick. The Forrest Sherman was officially added to the fleet in early 2006.
The ship was stationed at Naval Station Norfolk . In 2007, the destroyer laid with three of its sister ships as well as the USS Gettysburg (CG-64) and the USS Philadelphia (SSN-690) as an escort for the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as part of the war on terror of the United Forces States . In the summer of 2008, took Sherman in exercises with the Navy of Peru ( Partnership of the Americas and the multinational maneuvers) UNITAS part. In 2009 she was part of the Fleet Week in Port Everglades and took part in the BALTOPS exercise in the Baltic Sea in June and was part of the fleet that moored in Kiel for the Kiel Week.
Armament
For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2009/2010 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
