The Port Everglades seaport in Broward County , Florida is one of the largest container ports on the east coast of the United States and a major base port for the cruise industry .
Port Everglades is located on the southeast coast of Florida and is framed by the cities of Fort Lauderdale , Hollywood and Dania Beach . On a larger scale, it is about 23 miles north of Miami , 77 kilometers south of West Palm Beach and 500 kilometers south of Jacksonville, respectively . The port area has an area of just under nine square kilometers, of which about three quarters are in the area of the city of Hollywood. Port Everglades is not part of the Florida Everglades .
Port Everglades was originally known as Lake Mabel, and since the deepwater port opened in 1928, it has developed into a major economic center in South Florida. Over 5,000 ships call at the port annually and handle more than 23 million tons of cargo (mainly containers, liquid and solid bulk goods). Cruise ships also call at the port. There is also a US Navy base in the port .
