The USS Sampson (DDG-102) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . It is named after Admiral William Thomas Sampson , who won a victory for the US Navy in the Spanish-American War at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba .
history
DDG-102 was commissioned in 2002 and was part of the first batch approved in the new millennium. The keel was laid in March 2005 at Bath Iron Works . It took around a year and a half to build. Accordingly, the launch and christening of the ship took place in September 2006. Godmother was Mrs. Clara Parsons, the great-granddaughter of the admiral.
This was followed by the final equipment of the ship at the pier and the shipyard test drives. The official entry into the US Navy fleet took place on November 3, 2007 in the port of Boston . The Sampson was then stationed in San Diego and operates in the Pacific Fleet. The first mission began in July 2009 as escort of the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and led the destroyer into the Arabian Sea. In the summer of 2010, the Sampson took part in the multinational exercise RIMPAC , then in August 2011 in the Seattle Seafair .
