Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay , the curved bay , is an extinct volcanic crater in the southeast of the Hawaiian island of Oahu , a good 20 kilometers east of the center of the capital Honolulu . The crater is one of the sights on Oahu. Thanks to its opening to the sea, the crater offers a safe home for numerous fish species.

Excerpts from the Elvis Presley film Blue Hawaii were filmed here in 1961 .

The parking space at the upper edge of the crater is limited and mostly occupied in the morning hours. It is therefore advisable to arrive early. If the parking lot is occupied, no more vehicles will be allowed in on the main road. You can also choose to use public transport to get to Hanauma Bay. At the entrance you have to watch a film about the rules of conduct in the bay after paying the entry fee of $ 7.50 pp. In the case of repeated visits within a year, you can enter the bay without instruction if you register for this after watching the film. From the entrance you can walk or take the shuttle to the beach.

Today Hanauma Bay is one of the main tourist destinations in Oahu and is very popular with tourists, so that both the beach and the bay are often littered with bathers and snorkelers. Accordingly, the underwater world, especially the coral reef, has suffered and lost part of its original beauty. In order to offer a minimum of regeneration, (official) access is not possible on Tuesdays.
