The USS Bulkeley (DDG-84) is a destroyer of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . The United States Navy named the ship after the later Vice Admiral John D. Bulkeley , who received the Medal of Honor for his services in the Pacific War .

history

DDG-84 was commissioned in 1996 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in May 1999 . After just over a year of pure construction, the ship was launched in June 2000 and was christened. The Bulkeley was officially put into service in December 2001 after the final equipment and the shipyard test drives.

In 2004 the ship carried out its first mission in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom . The Bulkeley operated on the side of the carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) . The second transfer began in June 2006, this time as part of the combat group around the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) . In early 2008, the destroyer began a voyage to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, this time alongside the USS Nassau (LHA-4) . In January 2011, the Bulkeley moved alongside the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in European waters and further into the Indian Ocean, where the group was used to keep the sea lanes clear.
