Balmenach (pronunciations vary between [bal'mɛnəx] and [ˌbalme'nax] ) is a whiskey distillery near Cromdale , Moray , Scotland , Great Britain .

history

The distillery was probably founded by James McGregor in 1824. In 1897 it became the Balmenach Glenlivet Distillery Company . In 1930 the distillery was sold to Scottish Malt Distillers ( SMD ). Balmenach was closed from 1941 to 1947. In 1962 the number of stills is increased from four to six. In 1964 the malting floors are closed and replaced by a Saladin box which was used until the 1980s. In 1987 United Distillers ( UD ) bought the distillery. In May 1993 Balmenach was closed. In December 1997 the distillery was bought by Inver House Distillers and on March 2, 1998 production started again.

production

The water for the Speyside distillery comes from the Cromdale Burn. The malt is sourced from United Distillers-Maltings. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (7.6 t) of steel and six fermentation tanks ( wash backs ) made of Douglas fir (per 40,000 l). Is distilled in six stills , three of which are coarse blisters (wash stills) (per 16,000 l) and three fine blisters ( spirit stills ) (per 10,500 l) which are heated by steam.

Bottlings

There is currently no original bottling from Balmenach; The sherry-heavy 12-year-old bottling from the Flora & Fauna series by Diageo has disappeared from the market and can only be found at collectors. Since production only started again in 1998, it will probably be a few years before an original bottling comes onto the market again. Independent bottlers like Gordon & MacPhail still have some Balmenach bottlings in their product range.
