Leopold of Austria and Johann von Ochsenstein - Sempach Battle Chapel

Johann Ochsenstein was one of the six descendants of Otto VI. von Ochsenstein and Princess Elisabeth of Hesse. Johannes von Ochsenstein was bailiff in Alsace and Breisgau and at the same time provost in Strasbourg. He was a member of the noble society Löwenbund . As a punishment for the residents of Richensee joining the Confederates , Ochsenstein was burned as field captain under Leopold III. (Habsburg) together with Johann Truchsess von Waldburg the small town on February 9, 1386. Ochsenstein died in the Battle of Sempach on July 9, 1386 and is recorded in the list of fallen nobles on the Habsburg side in the Battle of Sempach in the Sempach Battle Chapel .

The "mocker"

“O Hasenburg, you have a rabbit heart.” Ochsenstein is said to have said to Baron Hans Ulrich von Hasenburg ( Barons of Hasenburg ). This because Hasenburg shrank from the Confederates. Ochsenstein should then go to Leopold III. have turned with the words: "We want to deliver these farmers boiled or fried to you before the night."

death

According to the legend, Ochsenstein died in the second clash of the troops: the most daring Waldstätter fought their way to the back of the ranks mercilessly and, with a piercing roar, pushed forward to the Austrian leaders, who on horseback shouted their last desperate orders through the cupped hand. They were not spared either and were rudely pulled down from their horses. The mocker Hans von Ochsenstein fell. The Lords of Tyrol sank, the banner of the Counts of Habsburg fell, and the main banner of Austria wavered and sank.

He was buried in Königsfelden in the canton of Aargau in the ladies' monastery of the Poor Clares .

Ochsenstein Castle

Ochsenstein Castle is located near Zabern in the Alsatian Vosges . The large rock castle consists of the three individual systems Wachelheim, Klein- and Groß-Ochsenstein, whereby the first two were at least temporarily combined to form a partial castle. In 1178 the three castles were first mentioned as the property of the Lords of Ochsenstein, Ludwig and Burkhard (born 1140) of Ochsenstein. In 1284 the castle was captured and destroyed by Walter von Hohenstein, bailiff in Lower Alsace .
