The South Korean Navy or Navy of the Republic of Korea ( Hangeul : 대한민국 해군, Hanja : 大韓民國 海軍 , English : Republic of Korea Navy , abbreviated ROKN ) is the naval force of the armed forces of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) .

It consists of 68,000 soldiers, including 29,000 marines , and is based in Gyeryong . The Navy has around 170 ships, 18 aircraft and 45 helicopters.
history
After the liberation of Korea from the Japanese occupation forces on August 15, 1945, the Association for Maritime Affairs ( English Maritime Affairs Association ) was founded under the leadership of Son Won-ils , which was converted into the Marine Defense Group on November 11, 1945 . Shortly thereafter, it was converted again to the Korean Coast Guard, before the Coast Guard was officially renamed the Republic of Korea Navy on August 15, 1948 . Son Won-il became the first Chief of Naval Operations on September 5, 1948 . On April 15, 1949, was Marines ( Republic of Korea Marine Corps ) in Jinhae founded.
