The Pohang-class ( 포항급 , Pohang-geup , Hanja 浦項 級 ), also known as the HDC 1200 KCX , is a class of twenty-four corvettes of the Navy of the Republic of Korea (ROKN).
history
The Pohang class was built between 1984 and 1993 at four different shipyards in South Korea. The lead ship the ROKS Pohang (PCC-756) was put into service in December 1984 and the last ship of the class, the ROKS Kongju (PCC-785) , was handed over to the South Korean Navy in July 1993.
The task of the class is to defend the coast against submarines , planes and ships. Hence the identifier as PCC which stands for Patrol Combat Corvette .
After the loss of the ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772) and the decommissioning of 11 ships, 12 units are still in active service with the Korean Navy. The Pohang class should, like the Ulsan class , by the frigates of the Incheon-class replacement.
