The Vietnamese People's Navy ( Vietnamese : Hải quân Nhân dân Việt Nam) is the Navy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam . In 2006 it consisted of 27,000 marines , 9,000 professional soldiers and 3,000 conscripts. The Navy's traditional day is August 5th in memory of the Tonkin incident .
history
The North Vietnamese Navy was established in 1955. It was expanded in the mid-1960s after Vietnam received 28 gunboats and 30 patrol boats from China . The USA supported the South Vietnamese Navy with arms deliveries. In Operation 34A , South Vietnamese commandos were brought to North Vietnam by speedboats under the leadership of the CIA . This was done with the support and reconnaissance of US Navy warships . After such an operation against the island of Hòn Mê , the Tonkin incident occurred in which allegedly North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked the US destroyer USS Maddox . In response, the Tonkin Resolution was passed and the US officially took part in the Vietnam War .
In order to secure the supply of the Viet Cong in the south, the 759th Brigade (later 129th Brigade) was founded by North Vietnam. As a maritime Ho Chi Minh trail , it transported material and personnel from Hai Phong in the north to the Ca Mau peninsula in the south during the Vietnam War . While the overland route via the Ho Chi Minh Trail took three to six months and suffered 80% losses, the sea transport only took eight days and had no losses during the entire time. In total, around 4400 tons of material and 113 cadre were transported to the south by boat in 76 missions.
When the United States withdrew from Vietnam in 1973, the South Vietnamese Navy had 42,000 soldiers and 1,400 ships. However, the reduction in US support meant that the South Vietnamese Navy had to suspend 50% of its operations. After the victory of North Vietnam, many South Vietnamese warships fled the country. The remaining ships were taken over by the North Vietnamese Navy, which now became the Navy of the United Vietnam.
Between 1978 and 1990, the Vietnamese Navy was expanded by the Soviet Union and in return the Soviet Union was allowed to operate a base in Cam Ranh Bay . At the time, it was considered the strongest navy in Southeast Asia. Because of a border dispute with China over the Spratly Islands , a sea battle broke out between the Chinese and Vietnamese navies in 1988 . The Chinese Navy set fire to three Vietnamese ships and killed 70 Vietnamese soldiers. As early as 1974 there was a similar battle between South Vietnam and China near the Paracel Islands .
After 1990, however, the Navy struggled to keep many ships seaworthy. Russia continues to be an important partner. However, the lease agreement with the Russian Navy for Cam Ranh Bay was terminated in mid-2001 . The People's Navy also receives support and spare parts supplies from India. Due to the renewed flare-up of border disputes with China, the purchase of six kilo class submarines was announced in 2009. In January 2012, the first warship built in Vietnam was put into service. The design was purchased from an unnamed foreign company. More warships are to be built in Vietnam in the future.
