The Chungmugong-Yi-Sun-sin-class ( Hangeul : 충무공 이순신 급 구축함, Hanja : 獨 島 級 強襲 上 陸 艦 ), also known as KDX-II - Korean Destroyer eXperimental II , is a class of six destroyers of the Navy of the Republic of Korea (ROKN).
General
This class of ships is part of the three-tier KDX program, at the end of which the South Korean Navy will have the capability to operate worldwide. In addition, the local shipbuilding and armaments industry is to be promoted, which is why all ships in the KDX program are built in South Korea. Some of the weapon systems also come from South Korean production.
While the KDX-I project is a relatively small, simply designed ship, the KDX-II is a much more advanced ship. The final stage of the KDX program is only under construction, but it will have a displacement of over 9,000 t and with their most modern weapon and electronic systems represent by far the most complex and powerful ships of the South Korean Navy.
technology
With a length of 150 m, a width of 17 m and a displacement of approx. 5000 t, they are considerably larger than the ships of the KDX-I class. In contrast to the previous class, stealth technology was also used for the first time . This is intended to reduce the radar and infrared signature to a minimum, but complete invisibility, as is often suggested in various media, is not possible.
A so-called CODOG drive, which stands for “Combined Diesel or Gas”, serves as the drive . This means that 2 diesel engines of approx. 10,000 HP each are used for slow travel, while the two diesel engines are switched off for higher speeds and two LM2500 gas turbines take over the drive. These are manufactured by General Electric and each deliver over 30,000 hp.
In addition, extensive electronic equipment is equipped, with the two-dimensional radar system AN / SPS-49 (V) 5 from Raytheon forming the core.
Armament
Probably the most important element of the armament is the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System with 32 cells. This is able to fire medium-range anti-aircraft missiles of the type SM-2 . It is also designed for the use of other guided missiles. It is not known whether these were also scaffolded and procured.
A starter for RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile and a goalkeeper close-range anti-aircraft gun are scaffolded for close-range air defense.
Two triple torpedo tubes in 324 mm caliber are also available for submarine hunting. The equipment also includes two quadruple starters for the RGM-84 Harpoon and a Mark 45 lightweight gun in 127 mm caliber.
