The South Korean Army or Army of the Republic of Korea ( Hangeul : 대한민국 육군, Hanja : 大韓民國 陸軍 , English : Republic of Korea Army , abbreviated ROKA ) is the land force of the armed forces of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) .

Korean spelling
Korean alphabet : 대한민국 육군
Hanja : 大韓民國 陸軍
Revised Romanization : daehanminguk yukgun
McCune-Reischauer : taehanminguk yukgun

It is the largest branch of the armed forces with over 560,000 soldiers (as of 2004). The army is also the most important part of the armed forces because of the mountainous topography of the Korean Peninsula with a mountain share of 70% and because of the threat posed by the North Korean armed forces with their strong presence along the demilitarized zone (2/3 are permanently stationed at the DMZ).

The ROK Army is divided into three armies organized: the first Army ( First Army , FROKA ), the second Army ( Second Army , SROKA ) and the Third Army ( Third Army , troka ). The current commander in chief of the South Korean army is General Cho Jung-hwan .

The army consists of the Army Headquarters , the Aviation Command and the Special Warfare Command , consisting of 560,000 soldiers who are organized in 11 corps , 49 divisions and 19 brigades . It has 5,350 tanks and armored vehicles, around 11,337 artillery pieces, 7,032 anti-aircraft missile systems and 13,000 systems for infantry support.
