The BMP-3 ( Russian БМП-3 ) is an armored personnel carrier from Soviet production.

The abbreviation BMP stands in Russian for Боевая Машина Пехоты ( B ojewaja M ashina P echoty ), which means something like "fighting vehicle of infantry".

history

The BMP-3 is not actually a further development of the BMP-1 / BMP-2 series , but a completely new armored personnel carrier. It was developed for the Soviet Army in the 1980s and then used by the Russian armed forces . The vehicle was first presented to the public in 1990 during a troop parade in Moscow. For an armored personnel carrier it has relatively strong characteristics of a light battle tank . So he stands between the two types, even if he can accommodate a seven-man infantry squad.

The armored personnel carrier is exported worldwide.

Function description

The crew of the BMP-3 consists of three men; an additional seven soldiers can be accommodated. The thickness of the turret armor is 23 millimeters, while the wall thickness of the hull is 19 millimeters. The hull of the BMP-3 is similar to that of the BMD airborne vehicle . The armor of the BMP-3 is reinforced with aluminum in composite construction and in the bow area protected against fire with 30 mm ammunition by composite armor made of aluminum, armor steel and shock-absorbing elements. The front of the tower is provided with spaced armor. Compared to the predecessors of the BMP-3, the number of hatches through which the infantry can use their handguns from inside the vehicle has been reduced: there is only one on each side and another on the right at the rear of the vehicle. The transport area can be entered via two large bulkheads above the stern. The vehicle has a system for generating overpressure for use under ABC conditions. The BMP-3 has a passive infrared system and a laser range finder.

Armament

The weapon system of the BMP-3 is fully stabilized in side and height; this means that you can shoot accurately while driving. The armament consists of a 100 mm tank cannon , a 30 mm machine cannon and a 7.62 mm machine gun . The tank cannon is also capable of firing grenades and anti-tank guided weapons of the type 9K116-3 Basnja ( NATO code name : AT-10 Stabber). All weapons are combined into a single unit in the tower. There are also two bow machine guns, depending on the version in caliber 7.62 mm or 5.45 mm.

Grenades can be fired at a rate of eight to ten per minute. The range of the tank cannon is 6500 meters with newer projectiles, with older projectiles it is effective at firing distances of up to 4000 meters. Fully ammunitioned, the BMP-3 carries 40 HE shells, 22 of which are in the automatic loading device, and eight 9K116 anti-tank guided missiles that can only be loaded manually. The automatic cannon has a supply of 500 rounds, reaches an effective combat range of 2000 meters on lightly armored targets (1500 meters on helicopters) and a rate of fire (rate of fire) of 650 rounds per minute. There are also six electrically detonating 81 mm smoke grenades attached to the tank. The commander's seat is in the tower on the right and the gunner's seat on the left.

The BMP-3 is motorized with a 500 PS engine (27 PS / t), it reaches 70 km / h on the road, a maximum of 45 km / h off-road and 10 km / h while swimming. For amphibious use, it has two water jet drives . When driving purely on the road, the BMP-3 can cover 600 km on one tank of fuel (690 liters).
