The BTR-152 ( Russian БТР-152 ), sometimes also referred to as SIS-152, is an armored personnel carrier made by the Soviet manufacturer Zavod imeni Stalina , or SIS for short. BTR is the abbreviation for Russian Бронетранспортёр ( bronjetransportjor ), German: armored transporter . In the National People's Army of the GDR , the wheeled armored vehicle was used as armored personnel carrier 152 ( SPW-152 ).
history
The BTR-152 was introduced by the Soviet Army in 1951 as the standard armored personnel carrier for motorized rifle troops. The basis was the experiences from the Second World War . German Panzergrenadiers accompanied the Sd.Kfz armored personnel carrier. 251 the tank troops went into battle and were thus protected from small arms fire until they intervened in the battle themselves. The Soviet leadership recognized the advantage of this concept. Under the Loan and Lease Act , the United States delivered numerous M2 and M3 half-tracks to the Red Army. However, the development of its own armored transporter during the war was postponed in favor of tank production.
The armored car BTR-152 was designed as a mass product and delivered to numerous Warsaw Pact states . He was also used by the Soviet allies in the Middle East. Israel captured such large quantities in the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War that it was sensible to reuse them with the Israeli armed forces . The BTR-152 was therefore there among others as support for the TCM 20 - aircraft gun used.
In most user countries, the BTR-152 has since been retired or assigned to the reserve forces.
technology
The BTR-152 is based on the chassis of the SIS-151 truck . The chassis of the 6 × 6 truck was fully armored, the front and the radiator strongly reminiscent of the armored personnel carriers supplied by the USA. The armor provided protection against fire from handguns and against fragmentation. The driving performance was poor, especially off-road. After a short time, almost all vehicles in service were converted to the chassis of the SIL-157 . The manufacturer was renamed Zavod imeni Lichatschowa (SIL) in the course of de-Stalinization in 1956. The conversion involved the introduction of larger tires and a central air pressure control system .
