The ZIL-158 , ( Russian ЗИЛ-158 ), was a bus made by the Soviet manufacturer Zavod imeni Lichatschowa , or ZIL for short. From 1959 production was relocated to Likinski Avtobusny Zavod (LiAZ). From 1961 the vehicles were only delivered under the name LiAZ-158 . With over 70,000 units built, the bus was very widespread in the Soviet Union in the 1960s. It had a front-mounted gasoline engine ; a rear-engined version was also made, which was named ZIL-159 .

History

The same vehicle to the left of a ZIS-154 (2009)

In 1957, ZIL began manufacturing a successor to the now outdated ZIS-155 city bus . Shortly afterwards, the decision was made to relocate production to LiAZ in Likino-Duljowo . Production of the model began there - still under the name ZIL-158 - in 1959. Production then ran in parallel in both plants. The ZIL-158W version was still being developed by ZIL, but only manufactured by LiAZ under the name LiAZ-158W. In 1961 production at ZIL was discontinued, and for more than 30 years no buses were manufactured in series. This only changed with the introduction of the ZIL-3250 in the late 1990s. LiAZ continued to produce the vehicle under the name LiAZ-158 until 1970, when it was replaced by the successor LiAZ-677, which had been built in parallel since 1967 .

Model variants

  • ZIL-158 (basic model, 1957–1961)
  • ZIL-158A ("Tourist" version with additional windows above the main window) *
  • ZIL-158B (version that could be operated without an additional conductor) *
  • ZIL-158W or LiAZ-158W (improved model, but externally indistinguishable, manufactured exclusively by LiAZ from 1961, changes to the chassis , engine and rear axle)
  • LiAZ-158WA ("Tourist" version of the improved variant, after 1961)
  • LiAZ-158G (improved variant without conductor, after 1961)
  • LiAZ-158WE (variant for export) *
  • ZIL-159 (rear engine vehicle) *

(for variants marked with *, the year of market launch is unclear)

There was also a 2PH-4 bus trailer with which the vehicles could run as trains.
