The ZIL-E167 ( Russian ЗИЛ-Э167 ) was an experimental vehicle from the production of the Russian vehicle manufacturer ZIL , of which a single copy was built between 1962 and 1963. It could carry a load of five tons or up to 14 passengers. For this purpose, a closed cabin was built on the chassis.

Vehicle history

With the ZIL-E167, a vehicle was to be created that was particularly suitable for the difficult conditions in Siberia. It was planned to be used in the oil industry , but also by geologists and other economic and research branches who had to carry out explorations or work away from the developed terrain. With its oversized wheels, all-wheel drive and a ground clearance of 0.85 meters , the vehicle was particularly well suited for driving in deep snow . Curved metal sheets were attached under the floor especially for this purpose in order to prevent large amounts of snow from collecting in front of the vehicle during the journey and thus impeding progress.

The construction of the vehicle was based on a resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in November 1961, which provided for the project to be completed by January 1, 1963. In 1963 a test phase of several years followed, in which over 20,000 kilometers were successfully covered with the prototype. Government agencies such as the Ministry of Defense signaled their willingness to accept up to twelve of the vehicles, but this never happened. One reason is seen in the fact that mass production of the all-terrain transport vehicle GT-T , which fulfilled a similar requirement profile, began at the same time .

After 2006 the vehicle was restored.

Technology of the vehicle

The military used ZIL-135

The technology of the ZIL-E167 is remarkable in several ways. The six wheels of the same size, each almost 1.80 meters in diameter, as well as the drive system are unusual. The three right and three left wheels were driven separately by their own motor via cardan shafts, so that the vehicle has two V8 petrol engines with a displacement of seven liters each. This drive concept is also used in the ZIL-135 , from which up to 70% of the other parts came. Most obvious is the cab, which has been completely taken over, but the engines have also been used in the ZIL-135, as well as in the Ural-375D . However, this motorization resulted in immense gasoline consumption: With the 900 liters of fuel in various tanks, the vehicle could travel around 600 kilometers. Front and rear wheels could be steered in opposite directions so that the turning circle was reduced.
