The half-track vehicle ZIS-42 ( Russian ЗИС-42 ) of the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Zavod imeni Stalina was the third and last half-track vehicle from Soviet series production from 1942 after the ZIS-22 and the GAZ-60 . Technically, it is based almost entirely on the ZIS-5 truck, with the exception of the modified chassis . It was mainly designed for off-road supplies and for pulling heavy artillery.

History

ZIS-42M
ZIS-42 as a fire engine

As early as 1938 and 1941, the less successful half-track vehicle ZIS-22 was produced in series at ZIS. In the summer of 1940, three prototypes were made, incorporating the experience gained with the ZIS-22. However, not all changes could be adopted into series production at that time.

From autumn 1942, an improved version of the ZIS-22 was produced again in series, as the Red Army still had a need for half-track vehicles. This version was essentially based on the prototype ZIS-22-52 from 1940, but was now called ZIS-42. The main problem of the earlier types, namely the slipping of the chains on the sprockets in difficult terrain or in bad weather (and therefore lack of drive), could be contained. The off-road mobility of the vehicle has thus been improved. However, the vehicle still fell short of expectations. In particular, in snowfields and swamps, the performance was still poor. In 1944 production was finally stopped after almost 6,000 copies. The further production of half-track vehicles was omitted due to the poor practical results. However, a prototype of a vehicle with half-chain drive based on the ZIS-150 truck , the ZIS-153, was created .

Versions

Since 1943 there was a variant called ZIS-42M with a ZIS-16 engine. The engine remained the same, but was renamed due to an increase in output from 73 to 85 hp. In practice, however, this engine also proved to be too weak for the heavy vehicle. In addition, from 1943, GAZ also manufactured a version with an automatic 37-mm anti-aircraft gun M1939 on the loading area. The result was named ZIS-43 . GAZ was only responsible for the construction. A few versions were also built as fire fighting vehicles.
