The ZIL-5301 ( Russian ЗИЛ-5301 , mostly with the suffix Бычок - Bulle) is a truck made by the Russian manufacturer Zavod imeni Lichatschowa , or ZIL for short. The light truck was produced in series from 1996 to 2014 and was on the market in various different versions. The buses ZIL-3250 and KAwZ-3244 are based on the vehicle.

As early as 1992, ZIL was busy developing the prototype of a new light truck. The resulting vehicle was made up of a combination of existing and purchased individual parts, including a chassis from a Mercedes-Benz T 2 , a cabin from a ZIL-4331 and a gearbox from a truck ZIL-130 .

In the two years 1994 and 1995, a pilot series of around 200 vehicles was produced, which were still built on the chassis of the Mercedes transporter. This approach was only discontinued when mass production began in 1996.

Most of the vehicle variants have been available since 1996. The following are important:

  • ZIL-5301AO - the basic version with a flatbed, built until 2010, also listed with the WE index,
  • ZIL-5301YesO - current platform variant, since 2005 also known as ZIL-5301KE,
  • ZIL-5301AA - with box body (long),
  • ZIL-5301TO - model with double cabin,
  • ZIL-5301BO - pure chassis without body,
  • ZIL-5301SS - closed box van (long).

Other superstructures or special model variants were also built, including tippers , a fire engine with a double cab and tow trucks (in some cases also with three axles). There is also a model with all-wheel drive.

Several different MMS-D245.9 diesel engines were available for the truck. All of them are four-cylinder engines that work according to the four-stroke process . They differ, for example, in their compliance with emission standards . While some of the engines do not meet the EURO standard, the type MMS-D245.9E3 is approved for EURO-3.

The manufacturer went bankrupt around 2013, so in 2014 production of the ZIL-5301 vehicles was also terminated.

Trivia

The ZIL-5301 is one of the very few series vehicles from Russian manufacturers whose designation does not adhere to the system for number assignment according to state standards established in Russia . The first digit should actually be a three and not a five, as the five incorrectly indicates a total weight of 14 to 20 tons. This is probably due to the fact that the ZIL plant, like many other Russian companies, suffered from an acute shortage of money at the beginning of the 1990s. Registering a new vehicle under a new code with the official bodies required a lot of documents, money and time. Instead, the type designation was simply adopted from a heavier, already registered vehicle. The "mistake" was never undone.

Although it can clearly be described as a truck with a gross vehicle weight of almost seven tons by German standards, the Russian word for the model is also a delivery van ( Russian фургон ), especially for closed bodies.

References and comments

  1. The model number ZIL-32502M makes it clear that the ambulance is actually based on the bus variant ZIL-3250 . However, since the bus was not developed from the truck until 1998, there is a close technical relationship between the vehicles.
