The ZIS-151 ( Russian ЗИС-151 ) was a four - wheel drive three - axle truck from the production of the Soviet manufacturer Zavod imeni Stalina , which was built in series from 1948. It was the successor to the ZIS-6 and various imported vehicles. In the course of de-Stalinization , the vehicle was renamed ZIL-151 in 1956 and finally replaced by the ZIL-157 two years later .

The development of the ZIS-151 goes back to the GAZ-33. This prototype of a three-axle, all-wheel drive truck was based on the GAZ-MM and was designed by Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod in 1946 in connection with the development of the GAZ-63 . There was no series production, instead the documentation and prototype were sent to the Zavod imeni Stalina (ZIS) in Moscow. Here they were looking for a truck that could replace the pre-war design of the ZIS-6 as well as various imported vehicles. The latter, such as the Studebaker US6 , came to the USSR as part of the loan and lease law in World War II .

At ZIS, the prototype's cabin was replaced by a more modern one from the ZIS-150 . This not only served to modernize, but also to standardize the trucks. In the summer of 1947, the plant presented two different prototypes. The ZIS-151-1 was equipped with all-round single tires, which enabled better driving performance, especially on paved roads. The ZIS-151-2, on the other hand, had double tires on the rear axles, which improved progress in wet and swampy areas. Since the Soviet Army was the planned main customer and they attached greater importance to the off-road capability of the new truck, the ZIS-151-2 was ultimately intended for series production.

The first series-produced ZIS-151 rolled off the assembly line in April 1948, with scheduled large-scale production not starting until October 8, 1948. Over time, details on the vehicles have been changed again and again. In 1950 the company switched to manufacturing the driver's cabs in all-metal construction. Before that, parts were made of wood because there was a lack of sheet steel. In 1952 and 1953 there were improvements to the braking system. Around this time, the carburettor was replaced by another model, which increased the engine output to 98 hp (72 kW).

In 1956, in the course of de-Stalinization, the "Sawod imeni Stalina (ZIS)" was renamed "Sawod imeni Lichatschowa (ZIL)". Logically, the ZIS-151 was also renamed ZIL-151. The vehicle kept this name until production was discontinued on September 18, 1958 in favor of the successor ZIL-157 .

The ZIS-151 was also imported into the GDR and used in the NVA in particular from 1956 .

Model variants

Numerous other vehicles are based on the chassis of the ZIS-151. The following list does not claim to be complete and is only intended to provide an overview.

  • ZIS-151 - basic version with flatbed
  • ZIS-151A - version with additional winch at the front
  • ZIS-151G - A tire pressure control system was installed in these vehicles .
  • ZIS-151D - ZIS-151 with a shield for the electrical components
  • ZIS-121B - Designed as tractor for tractor-trailers
  • ZIS-153 - Prototype of a half-track vehicle based on the ZIS-151, which however was never built in series.
  • ALM-32 - fire engine with turntable ladder
  • ARS-12 - decontamination vehicle
  • AChP-1,6 (Russian АХП-1,6) - with integrated extinguishing system for fighting engine fires with extinguishing foam
  • AZ-4-151 - Tank truck for fuel
  • DKA-025 - with a shovel excavator attachment
  • D-232 - Snow blower on the chassis of the ZIS-151

  • PMZ-13 - tank fire engine
  • PMZ-15 - Airport fire truck
  • PMZ-17 - tank tender
  • WSK - with compressor structure

In addition, the BTR-152 armored personnel carrier and the BAW amphibious vehicle (also known as ZIS-485) are based on the chassis of the ZIS-151. In the GDR, truck-mounted cranes were built on the ZIS-151, but most of them went to the Soviet Union as reparations . Another heavy snow blower based on the ZIS-151 was the D-262, which was built from 1951 to 1958. Various armies also use the ZIS-151 as a platform for a version of the Katyusha rocket launcher , the BM-13.
