The GAZ-MM ( Russian ГАЗ-ММ ) is a light Soviet truck that was produced in the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod from 1938 to 1947 and the Uljanowski Avtomobilny Sawod from 1947 to 1950. It was the successor to the GAZ-AA, the main buyer of the vehicles was the Red Army . There was also an ambulance version, the GAZ-55 .

Manufacturing history

The GAZ-AA was originally an exact copy of the American Ford-AA . The car was designed as a two-door pick-up and was equipped with mechanical brakes on both axles. Between 1938 and 1942, GAZ-AA and GAZ-MM rolled off the line in parallel. Until 1942, the GAZ-MM differed from the GAZ-AA only by a more powerful engine and minor changes in the invisible mechanics.

As is common in Soviet motor vehicle production, the vehicles were simplified during wartime due to material shortages. Roofs were made of fabric, the right headlight and bumpers were saved and fenders were greatly simplified. In 1943 the driver's cab began to be made of wood. In 1947 production was relocated to Uljanowski Avtomobilny Zavod , where it was finally stopped in 1950.

On the basis of the GAZ-MM, the coal-gas powered GAZ-43 and the half-track vehicle GAZ-65 were also developed. Furthermore, the GAZ-410 tipper , which was built from 1940 to 1950, is based on the GAZ-MM. The GAZ-42, which was built from 1939 to 1946 and operated with wood gas, was based on the GAZ-AA in its design, but the vehicles built in series used the GAZ-MM as a basis. The first version of the GAZ-62 with all-wheel drive from 1940 used assemblies of the GAZ-MM.

GAZ-55

The GAZ-55 was built on the basis of the GAZ-MM chassis. This differs from the basic version mainly in the structure, it was an ambulance. Due to the changed structure, the external dimensions of the models differ (GAZ-55: length 5425 mm, height 2340 mm). The curb weight increased to 2370 kilograms. Six to seven people could be transported, the ground clearance was 20 centimeters. In contrast to the truck, production was discontinued in 1945 after 9130 vehicles were built. From 1942, the ambulances experienced the same simplifications as the trucks.
