The GAZ-WM ( Russian ГАЗ-ВМ ), also known as NATI-WM , was an experimental Soviet half-track vehicle based on the GAZ-M1 passenger car , only two of which were built in 1937. It was one of several attempts by the auto industry in the Soviet Union to build a functioning half-track vehicle suitable for mass production.

Vehicle history

In 1937, a half-track vehicle based on the GAZ-M1 passenger car was developed at the vehicle construction institute NATI in cooperation with Gorkowski Awtomobilny Sawod (GAZ). The aim was to improve the cross-country mobility of the vehicles. Many parts of the car were taken over, for example the engine, parts of the body and the chassis. The latter, however, has been improved and adapted in order to be able to replace the rear axle with a chain drive.

Two vehicles were built, on the one hand a pickup with a loading area on which either six people or a load of 500 kg could be carried. For this vehicle, GAZ took over many parts of the GAZ-M415 , a series-produced pickup that was also based on the GAZ-M1. On the other hand, a passenger car with a Phaeton body with five seats and a soft top. The chassis was designed in such a way that the tracks could be removed. If the terrain or the road was good enough, the chains were removed and the driven and pneumatic rollers were used. If the terrain was too bad, the chains could be reopened. For driving on snow, the front wheels could be placed on runners, which, however, increased fuel consumption exorbitantly.

From December 1937 to March 1938 and from April to July 1938 the half-track vehicles were subjected to extensive tests. There was no series production. With the all-wheel drive of the GAZ-61, a more promising and simpler way of making vehicles suitable for off-road use had been found. With the GAZ-60 , a half-track vehicle was built a few years later, which was not very successful despite series production.
