The GAZ-46 is an amphibious vehicle with all-wheel drive from Soviet production, on the SUV -GAZ 69 is based. It was made by Gorkowski Avtomobilny Sawod and received the name MAW ( Russian МАВ , short for малый автомобиль водоплавающий, German about "small buoyant vehicle") in the armed forces . It is located below the BAW , the "large floating vehicle".
Vehicle history
As part of the Lend Lease Act , the Soviet Union also received American amphibious vehicles of the Ford GPA type during World War II . Of the vehicles built between 1941 and 1943 based on the Willys MB , depending on the source, between 2,200 and 3,500 units were used by the Red Army . This recognized the usefulness of the construction in combat.
After the war, from around 1949, the vehicle construction institute NAMI worked under the project name NAMI-011 with a successor based on the GAZ-67 . The project was later moved to Gorkowski Avtomobilny Sawod and continued there as GAZ-011. In 1953 a small series of 68 copies was produced, which were still based on the chassis of the GAZ-67.
In 1953 the chassis was replaced and that of the GAZ-69 was installed instead . The engine and gearbox were also adopted, although the engine is identical to that of the GAZ-M20. 654 units were built by 1958, after which production was discontinued. Although it was planned to relocate production like the off-road vehicle to Ulyanovsky Avtomobilny Sawod , this company failed. So it stayed with the vehicles that were built from 1953 to 1958.
The GAZ-46 was used in particular by engineer and reconnaissance units of the Soviet Army . It was also exported to other Warsaw Pact states .
