The GAZ-S1 ( Russian ГАЗ-С1 ), from 1940 called GAZ-410 (Russian ГАЗ-410), is a truck made by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod . It was produced in series from 1933 to 1950 and is the tipper version of the GAZ-AA . From the time of the renaming, this vehicle also received a more powerful engine in parallel to the successor to the GAZ-AA, the GAZ-MM .

Model history

In the mid-1930s, the engineer M. Katkow was busy manufacturing a truck body that was supposed to be suitable for the transport of bulk goods. Based on the chassis of the GAZ-AA platform truck , a prototype of a tipper was created, which was completed in early 1935. It was designed for just over a ton of payload and the trough held 1.1 cubic meters of material. In the same year, “Yes. M. Swerdlow ”(named after Jakow Michailowitsch Swerdlow ) built six more trucks, which were given the abbreviation S1 due to the name Swerdlow. GAZ continued to manufacture the chassis and driver's cabs, which is how the name of the new truck, GAZ-S1, came about.

In the following year, series production of the GAZ-S1 began. The steelworks still manufactured the superstructures and the tilting mechanism, but the assembly of the vehicles took place at GAZ itself. The relatively small trucks were particularly valued for their maneuverability. Production continued until 1940.

As early as 1936 Katkow had planned another S2 tipper with a payload of two tons, but it did not go into production.

Until 1940 there were active efforts in the Sverdlov steelworks to increase production in cooperation with GAZ. From this point on, however, GAZ took over the production of the superstructures itself. The name of the vehicle was changed to GAZ-410, around the same time other changes took effect. The tipper was now built on the chassis of the GAZ-MM, which had minor differences to that of the predecessor GAZ-AA. Furthermore, the GAZ-M1 engine, which is 10 hp more powerful, was built in, but only differed from the old model in terms of its increased performance.

Due to the Second World War , the production of the vehicles fell sharply. In addition, as with the standard model, major simplifications came into force from 1942. Doors were made of wood, the roof no longer solid, but laid out as a tarpaulin. The headlight on the passenger side has been eliminated entirely and the fenders have been greatly simplified. These changes were only partially reversed after the war. During the war and until 1948, the truck was the only tipper that was ever made in the Soviet Union. It was not until 1948 that a successor to the truck was introduced with the GAZ-93 , the tipper version of the GAZ-51 . Production ended in 1950 after a total of 16,261 units had been built. Today only one vehicle has been preserved as a museum.
