The GAZ-93 ( Russian ГАЗ-93 ) is a truck made by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod . It was produced in series in various variants from 1948 to 1976 and is the tipper version of the GAZ-51 . In total, over 312,000 vehicles were built of all model variants of the GAZ-93.

History

Delayed by the Second World War , it was not until 1948 that the Soviet Union began to manufacture a successor to the now very outdated GAZ-410 tipper . It was based on the new GAZ-51 truck , the frame of which had been shortened by 320 millimeters. The production was originally supposed to take place in the Uralsky Avtomobilny Zavod , but was instead moved to an assembly plant in Odessa . The first dump truck rolled off the assembly line there in December 1948. Not only was the body and the hydraulic tilting mechanism manufactured in Odessa, the production of other parts, such as the oil pumps, was also relocated to the factory.

Expansion plans for the plant had been drawn up as early as 1950, which were supposed to increase output to 60 trucks per day. In mid-1952, the production capacity was given as 20,000 tippers per year.

In 1954, the dump body was enlarged and the result was named GAZ-93D. This version was built until 1956. From this point on, the trucks were built on the revised chassis of the GAZ-51A, the new designation was GAZ-93B. Production in Odessa ended three years later, in 1959. From now on the tippers were assembled in Saransk , first in Saranski Mechanitscheski Sawod, later in Saranski Sawod Avtosamoswalow (SAZ) ( Russian Саранский завод автосамосвалов (САЗ) ). It wasn't until 1976 that production ended here in favor of new models based on the GAZ-53 and GAZ-52 . A total of 312,210 GAZ-93s were built in 28 years of production.

Modifications

The list is not exhaustive.

  • GAZ-93 - the original version, manufactured from 1948 to 1955.
  • GAZ-93D - version with newly designed tipping body, now 3.16 m³ loading volume instead of the previous 1.65 m³. Manufactured from 1954 to 1956.
  • GAZ-93B - Revised version based on the GAZ-51A. Built from 1956 to 1976. According to other sources, production was stopped in 1975.
  • GAZ-93W - prototype from 1961 with a semicircular tipping body. Only one copy was made.
  • GAZ-93A - Version manufactured from the end of 1960 with a reduced tipping body. It was intended for heavy bulk goods such as building materials (sand, gravel, stones). In practice, problems arose that the older models were often overloaded during such operations.
  • GAZ-93AE - export variant for countries with a moderate climate
  • GAZ-93AT - export variant for countries with very humid or tropical climates
