The GAZ-21 ( Russian ГАЗ-21 ), also known as the GAZ-M21 , was a test vehicle manufactured in the second half of the 1930s in the Soviet Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod . Technically, it emerged from the GAZ-M1 passenger car and the GAZ-AA truck . The vehicle is not to be confused with the much better known GAZ M-21 Volga , a passenger car also manufactured by GAZ from the 1950s and 1960s.

History

In the 1930s, GAZ made various efforts to make vehicles suitable for off-road use. One approach was to add a second powered rear axle to existing vehicles in order to achieve better traction off-road. This idea was also implemented at the GAZ-AAA , for example .

Building on this concept, the first version of the GAZ-21 was created in 1936. The body of a GAZ-M1 was lengthened and equipped with a second, driven rear axle. In addition, a second variant was made as a truck. He also took over parts of the GAZ-AA truck, especially the driver's cab. In contrast to the GAZ-AA, both vehicles were manufactured with the performance-enhanced engine of the GAZ-M1.

At the end of 1937, the vehicles were tested on a 10,000-kilometer journey through the Ukraine, the Caucasus and central Russia, which was satisfactorily covered. A total of around 100 vehicles of both versions were built; there was no real mass production. The reason for this was that the original goal - building an all -terrain vehicle - had already been achieved with the GAZ-61 with all-wheel drive.
