The GAZ-24 Volga ( Russian ГАЗ-24 "Волга" ) is a passenger car built from 1967 to 1992 by the Soviet manufacturer GAZ (Russian Горьковский автомобильный завод (ГАЗ), English. Transcription Gorkovwerk Avtomobiliersky Avtomobilier) .

Vehicle history and construction

The vehicle is constructed with a self-supporting body . The engine sits above the front axle on a subframe and drives the rear axle via a cardan shaft . The front axle is equipped with double wishbones and coil springs. The rear axle is designed as a rigid axle with leaf springs. Inclined shock absorbers suppress the spring oscillations and dampen transverse movements of the axis. The foot brake acts hydraulically in a dual-circuit brake system with dual-mode drum brakes at the front axle and simplex drum brakes at the rear axle. A vacuum brake booster is available to boost the brake force. The handbrake acts on the rear axle.

The Volga has an oil cooler with an associated oil shut-off valve, through which the oil cooler can be switched on or off the engine oil circuit depending on the season, so that the engine reaches operating temperature more quickly in cold weather or to cool the engine oil when outside temperatures are high. In addition, there is a lever with which the radiator shutter is closed by means of a Bowden cable in order to prevent the air flow to the water cooler. It is possible to start the engine with a crank if the starter or the on-board electrical system fails. A crank handle is part of the tool kit for this purpose. At the front of the car there is a flap with a corresponding opening behind the license plate. Through it, the crank can be inserted, which engages in a claw on the crankshaft.

Due to the long production period, the vehicle was repeatedly changed slightly. Until around the beginning of 1970, the specimens were fitted with exterior mirrors on the fenders , after which one was attached to the A-pillar on the driver's side, as is common today , while the one on the passenger side was omitted. From 1974 there was again a modified exterior mirror and some minor modifications. A version called GAZ-24-24 with a 5.54-liter V8 engine that developed 145 kW was produced in small series. These vehicles were used almost exclusively by the KGB and were not available to private buyers.

The 1977 model year brought a significant change. The vehicle was completely redesigned, whereby the length changed slightly due to a modified bumper. From 1985, production was optimized for larger numbers and the vehicle, now called GAZ-24-10 , was simplified accordingly. The engine now produced 73 kW.

The vehicle was used throughout Eastern Europe primarily as a government vehicle or taxi. Smaller numbers were also sold to Western Europe, here under the name Scaldia-Volga M24 .

The Belgian importer Scaldia-Volga equipped Wolgas with diesel engines purchased from Peugeot . For countries with left-hand traffic such as Indonesia, India or Great Britain there was a right-hand drive version.

The GAZ-24-02 is the combination model of the GAZ-24 . The vehicle was produced from 1972. The weight of the operational trolley is between 1500 kg and 1575 kg. A second rear bench seat, available as an extra, allows a total of seven people to be transported. Like the sedan, the station wagon was revised in 1987 and launched on the market as the GAZ-24-12 .
