The GAZ-M415 ( Russian ГАЗ-М415 ) was a Soviet pick-up that was mass-produced by Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod (GAZ) from 1939. It is based heavily on the GAZ-M1 from 1936. Occasionally used alternative names are GAZ-415 and GAZ-M-415 .

Vehicle history

Rear view of the restored vehicle (2014)

There was already a light truck or pick-up based on GAZ's first passenger car, the GAZ-A , the GAZ-4 . Its production was initially discontinued in 1936 without replacement. It was not until 1939 that series production of a pick-up began again based on the GAZ-M1 that had now been built. This vehicle was given the number GAZ-M415, where M stands for Molotov , just like the GAZ-M1 , the then head of government of the Soviet Union, whose nickname was the GAZ factory. The first prototypes from the late 1930s still had a continuous body, whereas in series production a separate, angular loading area was built in. The frame and drive train were completely taken over from the passenger car.

During the short production time, the body of the GAZ-M415 was also used on various other vehicles:

  • GAZ-11-415 - With the GAZ-11-73 there was a six-cylinder version of the GAZ-M1 passenger car from 1939. This engine, actually intended for a truck, was also built into the GAZ-M415 on a trial basis. Series production did not take place for unknown reasons.
  • GAZ-61-415 - A vehicle that combined the all-wheel drive chassis of the GAZ-61 with the body of the GAZ-M415. Very few copies were made for the Red Army .
  • A prototype with an extended wheelbase was built.

It is not clear exactly how many copies were actually built. The information fluctuates between almost 5000 and 5383. Due to the war, production ended in 1941 and was not resumed after 1945. However, there is a possibility that individual pick-ups were still built from existing parts in the war years, as was the case with other cars from the manufacturer.

Today only three GAZ-M415 are known, at least one vehicle has been restored.
