The GAZ-64 ( Russian ГАЗ-64 , in the German transcription GAS-64) was an off-road vehicle made by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod , which was produced during the Second World War .
Vehicle history
The GAZ-64 was the successor to the GAZ-61 , which was completely redesigned in 1941 within a few weeks. The vehicle is based on the American Willys MB and models from American Bantam and is also called "Soviet Bantam" in the literature. WA Malyshev , who was also responsible for many other vehicle developments and was informed about current US developments, supervised the construction. Accordingly, the off-road vehicle was based on these vehicles. A total of only 686 copies were made between March 1941 and summer 1942. The vehicle was then replaced by the GAZ-67 . The Soviet BA-64 armored car uses the same chassis as the GAZ-64.
